A short, wide hot water cylinder under a metre tall sitting in a low cupboard beneath a fixed shelf, with valves and copper pipework on top and only a little clearance above.

135 litres is the small-house size: a unit, a one or two person household, or an older home replacing a like-for-like cylinder. It is also the size with the widest spread of shapes, from 935 mm stubby units to slimlines nearly 1.4 m tall. Here is every 135 litre class cylinder we sell.

The Rheem MPVE 32213515 ($1,440) and Rinnai ME135590E30 ($1,570) are both 935 mm tall, 580 and 590 mm across. They fit under a shelf, a bench or a low ceiling where a slimline will not. The Rinnai is rated indoor or outdoor; the Rheem is indoor only.

Slimline: about 490 mm across

Thermann 135L 490 x 1298 mm, Rheem 31213515 488 x 1330 mm, Rinnai ME135488E30 488 x 1395 mm. For a narrow cupboard. See will your new cylinder fit.

How heavy is a 135 litre cylinder?

Thermann list their 135L at 50 kg empty, about 182 kg once it holds 132 litres of water.

How long does a 135L cylinder take to heat up?

About 7.8 kWh from 15°C to 65°C: 2.6 h with a 3 kW element, 3.9 h with the 2 kW element in the copper low pressure models. See how long a cylinder takes to heat.

Is 135 litres enough?

135 litres usually suits 1 to 2 people. If the hot runs out mid-shower now, go up a size rather than replacing like for like: see what size cylinder do I need.

Thermann 160L: more water in nearly the same space

The Thermann 160L holds 163 litres in 530 x 1315 mm, only 17 mm taller and 40 mm wider than the Thermann 135L, with a 3.6 kW element. It is $1,210. If the cupboard has the width, it is the easy way to get more hot water from the same spot.

The copper units are shorter (Rheem 16T13513 1145 mm, Rinnai LC13551020 1170 mm) but carry 5 years on the cylinder, against 10 for the Rheem LPVE 14813515T enamel. The Rinnai LC13551020 is triple inlet. See low or mains pressure.

Looking for 100 or 120 litres?

We do not stock those sizes. The 935 mm stubby 135s above are the usual answer for a small space; for a sink or a sleepout see small cylinders from 25 litres.
